19/20 School Year FAQs
What is the best way to contact my child’s teacher?
The best way to contact me is typically through email. I will check and respond to this several times per day. Typically before school, at lunch and after school. Your child will have a daily communication folder, and I ask that you check and send this back daily, however, since most correspondence is online, there are not many items that will come home. You may also use this to send in handwritten notes, but I may not be able to respond until the following day in this case. For last minute transportation changes, please call the school office as I am not guaranteed to see emails or notes during the school day.
I will also email out a weekly newsletter to give updates and let you know what we did in school that week.
I strongly encourage you to follow us on Twitter to see snippets and pictures of what we are doing throughout the day. This is the best way to get up-to-date and fast glimpses into our school day. I try to post at least one thing several days per week.
See "stay connected" page for more info on how to contact us.
What time does kindergarten start?
AM kindergarten runs from 9:05 AM - 11:55 AM
PM kindergarten runs from 12:55 PM - 3:45 PM
Please be prompt with both arrival and dismissal. With our short day, we use every second!
Where does my child get picked up/dropped off if he or she is a car rider?
AM kindergarten drops off in the back by the playground (they will walk in independently guided by staff and safety patrol, but our classroom door is the first one that they will see when entering the building) and picks up in the front of the building. We will walk the students out to you at the end of the day for pick-up.
PM kindergarten is opposite - drop-off is in the front of the building (please wait with your child until 12:55 when someone retrieves him from the doorway- there will be no staff members available to watch them if you leave them prior to the start of the school day), and pick up is in the back of the building by the playground.
How do I find the bus route?
Bus pick-up/drop-off locations can be found on Home Access Center. If you cannot find this information, please contact the school office. Times are not posted until a few days prior to school starting and may be adjusted as students are added and removed from routes during the first few weeks of school.
***These tend to change a few times during the week before and first week or so of school. Please check daily for time and/or location updates. Thank you for your understanding and patience as the transportation department works out the beginning of the school kinks.
What is the Home Access Center?
It is important that you log into the Home Access Center and create and account. This is how you will gather important information, such as progress reports and bus info, and how you will share important information with us such as emergency contacts. Please visit the "parent" tab on the Hilliard City Schools webpage (www.hilliardcityschools.org) to access this.
Do you have a daily snack?
Due to our short day, we do not have a set snack time. However, if your child can’t make it through the morning of afternoon without one, you are welcomed to send in a small, healthy and quick nut-free snack (small bag of pretzels, grapes, etc., for him or her to eat during centers. NO drinks please - we have a drinking fountain in the room, and drinks can be messy and time-consuming. I also ask that you stay away from sending in treats, such as cookies, candy, and chips, especially messy ones, such as cheetos, for a daily snack. Save these for special days, such as parties.
What should my child bring with him or her each day?
Please have your child bring a backpack that is large enough to hold a standard folder each day. If your child is accident-prone, you may also want to leave a change of clothes in his or her backpack. We have a bathroom in the room, and students are encouraged to go as needed, but accidents still do happen on a occasion at this age.
Please send him in comfortable clothes that are okay to potentially get a little messy. If your child cannot independently tie his or her own shoes, I also highly recommend sending them in a pair sturdy slip-ons or velcro shoes.
What if my child has allergies or other food restrictions?
Please notify me of this immediately. I am very diligent about allergies, so please know that your child is safe. Please send in small alternative snacks in the event that someone sends in a birthday snack that is questionable for your child. Please also contact the school office immediately to make them aware of the situation, make an action plan, and if need be bring in medications to be kept in the office.
Can I walk my child in on the first day to take pictures?
If you feel that this will be beneficial to your child, you are welcomed to do so.
(*Please note that anytime you come in the building you are not permitted to park in the drop off line, you must find an actual parking spot in the front of the building).
However, most people find, that walking a child into school can make it will make it more difficult for him or her to separate. In this case, we ask that you take the first day pictures at home, and send him or her to school independently. Parents who choose to walk to class for the first day are asked to do so quickly outside the classroom door, and then leave promptly as to not disrupt this delicate transition process.
Can I send a snack on my child’s birthday?
Yes, but it must meet the guidelines for class allergies so that everyone can enjoy it safely. A full allergy list and suggested snacks will be sent soon. Please check the label for the wording “processed on shared equipment” - this is often overlooked and shows up in unexpected places. SNACKS WITH AIRBORNE AND SURFACE-CONTACT ALLERGEN-RISKS (SUCH AS NUTS) WILL NOT BE SERVED.
Can I volunteer?
Yes, volunteers are welcomed and appreciated. Volunteering typically starts after the first few weeks of school to give kids time to adjust to being independent at school. A sign-up sheet for a classroom volunteering schedule will come home soon. You must have a volunteer badge/background check. It is a simple process. Please use the following link to do so. https://bib.com/secureVolunteer/Hilliard-City-Schools/
